Re: Quotes from Bart Plantenga's new book...

Bart has several mentions of me in there (12 to be exact).

The actual story with a photo reads like below:

1934

Under that is the Lister Trio photo with our Cowboy Duds where we are going to the 1950 Hollywood Road to Fame TV Show.

Then it has: Janet McBride (1934 - ) with roots in California, Texas, and New England, is one of those lifers: She yodels at every turn: She's born to yodel. She was one of the first yodelers I approached for inclusion on Rough Guide to Yodel.

In one of our many conversations she explained how she and her siblings formed the Lister Trio, listening to the great live country shows on Chicago's and Wheeling's Mega stations. 'I first heard the early morning cowboy singers on the local radio stations. Most had a theme song with yodel patterns, I came to realize they were from Montana Slim, Slim Clark, Elton Britt, Rosalie Allen and Patsy Montana.

I was listening to Tony and Juanita and their group. I'm talking early 1942. 'She practiced by yodeling along to the radio and taught her siblings to yodel in harmony. She caused many a neighbor to move from one trailer space to another just to get away from the noise'.

In 1954, she and her husband, Claude, headed to Nashville, (it was 1960 but who cares), yodeling without apology. By the 1960s she was a popular recording artist, which, of course did not come without begging Nashville producers and holding down jobs at factories or beauty parlors. Her two CD 50 Years of Yodeling (2002) includes sixty-one yodels, which says it all, except that, by now, it's nearly sixty years and a few yodel CDs more! She has dedicated more time and effort and invested more enthusiasm into yodeling than anyone else alive. When I think of influential living yodelers, I immediately think of McBride.

Her Cowtown Opry yodel workshops in Fort Worth have single-epiglottis-ly created a whole new generation of yodelers by stretching her lineage from patsy Montana to herself and on through younger generations.

Mentoring younger yodelers might come from those early childhood experiences: an announcer once called her 'The Little Girl with the Big Voice." The list of yodelers -her 'Buckaroos" she has mentored or influenced included Le Ann Rimes, Lee Ann Womack, Richie McDonald, Tim Rushlow, David Bradley, and Ken Lattimore (Sons of the Pioneers), Taylor Ware, Naomi Bristow (two time WMA Yodeling Award winner), Catherine Bowler, Joanna Allen, Kacey Musgraves, Mallary Hope, Kazzie Shae (1999 Wma Yodeling Award winner Kelly Sowell, Kata Hay, Justin Tyler Wilson, Aly Sutherlin, Amanda, Kaci Alred, Chelsea Beck (2006 WMA Yodeling Award winner), and Ginny Mac. (some of those names aren't yodelers but who cares).

Definitely one of the most influential yodelers alive. McBride is herself a three time WMA Yodeling Award winner. (this isn't right again I personally don't care but two of these awards are from AWA).

WOW, THIS IS A BOOK WITH WORLD WIDE PUBLICATION

This new book by Bart Plantenga is now on Amazon. You can go to the link by clicking the picture above. Amazon says there are only a few left in stock. But there is the Kindle Edition available.

Here is a photo of Janet and Patsy at the Longhorn Ballroom in 1967. Says Janet: It is very fuzzy and it broke my heart when I saw it because it was the very first photo of me and Patsy Montana. But, it is what it is AND the only photo of me with Patsy until the 1984 photo in Mesquite.

Re: Christmas Day news about Bart Plantenga's Book "Yodel in HiFi!"...

Hello girls and Paul & Tex. This book is in the $30 dollar range but it is by the fella who wrote the book YODEL AY EE OOOOO and boy did he put some nice things in there about me. LOTS of mentions.

I told my Son In Law if I kept on I might just become famous and he said 'GRAMMA, YOU ARE FAMOUS'.

HUMMMMMMMMMMM.

This book is something else.

I'll send you some of his quotes/maybe not today 'CHRISTMAS' but it is really a nice surprise for me. YIPPEEE.

Re: A later response to the webmaster's congratulations and mention of seeing friend Mike Johnson in the flyer for the book...

Yes about a gift on Christmas. Yes, Mike no doubt told Bart a lot about me plus Bart is a friend of the Eivand fella who made the documentary so he knew from them a lot of stuff also.

He said some really great things.

Clicking the photo above will bring up a flyer with more information, and if you scroll down to the bottom, you'll see a picture of Mike Johnson just left of center. Below is a photo of Mike with our Janet.

Re: Mary Resek and Santa's Yodeling Song...

Please click to see a larger version.

AWESOME!!! TRULY WONDERFUL

Mary Resek has recorded "Santa's Yodeling Song" and has a wonderful [version] of it.

Janet wrote Mary with these words:

I picked the CD up at the P.O. yesterday and played it this morning. Just wonderful and thank you so much for doing it.

What a wonderful job you did.

To which Ms. Resek responded:

Thank you Janet. :)

You can get people to go to itunes or CDbaby for digital downloads. If you go to CD baby and "search" my name my "site" will come up and then just follow directions. It's also on my website for listening only -- no downloads.

I'm on my way as we speak to a radio station this morning in High River Alberta (www.highriveronline.com) to cohost a morning show. I will be promoting the song here as well as my upcoming album .. just creating the buzz wherever I can.

Thanks again for your support. :)

And Merry Christmas..

Mary

You can visit Mary's website by clicking here. You can find her version of "Santa's Yodeling Song" on CDBaby here. Congratulations both Mary and Janet!

Re: Announcement of Curb Records contract...

Gwen Young and myself, co-writers and publishers of the song "Yodeling at the Grand Ole Opry," have signed a contract with Curb Record Co. for the release of the song by Rachel Holder on Curb Records.

You can go to Rachel's website by clicking her photo above. Rachel will deliver the National Anthem on Dec. 23rd at the Dallas Cowboys Game. You can see a very interesting article on her at Yahoo Music by clicking here.

Re: Last booking of the year...

No other bookings but one annual 30 minute that Larry Shipman and I will do next Wed. at Diane's Place in Mesquite. She has about 5 folks and runs an assisted living home. Very small but so nice. We've done it for about 5 years or more.

4PM. Dec. 19th. John did it with me in 2010 two days before he passed away. They loved him and he was well enough to play his harmonica for them.

Here are Janet and Devon posing with a marshmallow turkey on December 1st at the Gene Autry Fan Club annual get-together! Says Janet: Looked yummy but I have tried not to fall into all of those traps. Some of us wish we had your discipline, Janet! :-)

Said Janet further: that [photo] was [taken at] the 'Gene Autry Oklahoma Support Group' that was active back when we could support G.A. Okla. We have a luncheon often through the year but we have had Christmas Luncheon's or parties for many years just to get together.

Our Christmas Luncheon for 2012 was on Dec. 1 at El Fenix Restaurant and this great fun photo was taken there. I particularly liked this photo cause we were obviously having fun.

Re: Fly By Night Girl duet on YouTube...

On YouTube my brother, Danny Lister, is singing 'Fly By Night Girl' with me singing harmony.

Evidently a record collector has his site with old country music.

That song was cut in about 1962 or so but I have always liked it. My brother only made one record and that's it. It sure sounded great.

Western Music Association’s
2012 Awards of Excellence

The Western Music Association Annual Awards Show was held Saturday, November 17, at the Historic KiMo Theatre in downtown Albuquerque.

WMA Member Janet McBride received the Curly Musgrave Silver Buckle Award.

This award is given to anyone in the Western Music Community who exemplifies the true cowboy spirit through their code of ethics, principles of honesty, loyalty and integrity. Whether they are poets, pickers, singers, ranchers or cowboys, they must bring the simple, timeless values embodied in the “Code of the West” back to the forefront of American Life. This award is presented by the Musgrave Family to honor Curly and the Cowboy Way of Life that Curly dearly loved.

The WMA Awards are an opportunity for the Association to recognize those members who have shown the greatest competence in recordings or concerts and in taking the genre of Western Music and Poetry to the public.

The Western Music Association is an organization that encourages and supports the preservation, performance and composition of historic, traditional and contemporary music of The American West. WMA was founded in 1989.

For additional information, contact Marsha Short: westerngroupie@aol.com.

Way to go, Janet!

Janet joined Bob Fee on stage as a prize presenter. Here is a screen-grab from a video (which you can see by clicking the photo), about which she states:

You can use whatever of this you want. Buckaroos' Leah Grace and Mustang Mikki, and the gentleman is BOB FEE from WMA.

As stated above, Janet, herself, won an honor: the "Curly Musgrave Silver Buckle Award." You can view all of the award winners (including Mustang Mikki for the "Janet McBride Yodeling Award") by clicking here.

Re: Trip to Branson to see the RFD-TV Midwest Country Stars...

I had a reallly good trip up to Branson. Left Wednesday morning, stopped at my brother's house for the afternoon and night of Wednesday, got up early Thursday and had breakfast/my usual of toast and then drove up to Branson where I first met up with my (9 year old) little mentee Ezrah Cheek for some yodel coaching.

She was having a sore throat after yodeling so we met to try to figure it out. First we lowered the key one 1/2 step
and then talked about yodeling and stuff. What a darling girl she is and a big vote of THANKS to her mother who has moved up there (to Branson) so that Ezrah can actually fulfill her dreams of stardom some day.

About 5 PM there was a knock on the motel door and there stood Jack and Marge Hennenfent and Lowell and June Lydic and our group was complete. We said goodbye to Ezrah and her Mom and and made plans to go to Tex and Mary's Room to say Howdy. An added treat was to find that Bobby Darrin & Sheila Marie were in the same motel and over they came. Bobby is a super picker and singer and his niece Sheila Marie is a fine country singer in her own right.

We all had the pleasure of some 'one on one' at breakfast on Friday when Maggie Mae showed up and joined our party of 12 folks who come up to see the show at the RFD-TV Theater.

Anyway, life is almost back to normal and all is well.

Notes Janet: This Maggie Mae photo from Branson is from my camera. Maggie is one of my mentees.

OK Kids, I know many of you know Kacey Musgraves because we always bring her name up as a former Buckaroo. You can continue to help her if you will call your radio stations and request that they play Kacey's New Release.

Go for it.

From Kacey's grandmother:

Kacey's song "Merry Go Round", released today, Sept. 10, to national radio. The song was drop shipped last week to radio stations and has already been played and charted so much that Kacey is # 48 on Billboard.

Call your local station and request "Merry Go Round", please.

Carthage is where they have the Tex Ritter bronze w/his horse etc and the really nice Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

What a great opportunity for me to just be a judge of some great talent.

Re: response to my email on a memory of Jeannie Seely from the 60s...

I know most of you have not met Alexa Whipple but she is the girl in my book that I am sitting with on the 'gazebo' stage in Cedar Kansas and she will be on Shotgun Red's Show on June 4 at 6PM, June 5 at 8 AM and June 10 at NOON.

She is still in high school and from Arapahoe Nebraska but she is a

very pretty girl and sings a wonderful song/also yodels but I don't know what she will sing or perform on the show.

I hope everyone is watching. I am but one of her mentors.

Re: picking up new yodelers to mentor...

I have picked up a 3 1/2 year old girl, her 6 year old brother, a 9 year old from Louisiana, a Canadian girl, and a 16 year old all in the last few days.

Love it, Love it.

April 30, 2012

Re: response to my email on a memory of Jeannie Seely from the 60s...

Yes, when she hit it big with that song of course ["Don't Touch Me If You Don't Love Me, Sweetheart"], we lost touch until my years with the opry and we'd travel to Fan Fair with the whole troupe of 'opry' fans and singers. From the meetings where we reconnected and I knew she hadn't forgotten about me/us in the years of So. Calif. She is a really great gal and I too am a big fan of hers.

She actually picked up the phone and called Pat Boilesen when she was looking for a comment from Jeannie on the book. Pat nearly fainted when she answered the phone and it was Jeannie personally. I was there at Pat's that day and I also talked with her for a few minutes. Pat and I were on cloud nine the rest of the day.

Re: Janet's note to the Buckaroos regarding Ezrah Cheek going to the Clay Cooper Show in Branson, Missouri...

Hello to all Buckaroos,

You know we try to keep everyone informed on our Buckaroos when something neat happens for them. Ezrah will be a regular performer on the Clay Cooper Show from May 11th until December.

As her Mom Ginger adds 'unless she gets tired of it'. Ezrah is still very young but right now she is really into it and excited so they will take it as it comes.

For all who might be wondering 'it is Ezrah who has made this choice.'

We all wish them all the best and hope some of us can see that show while she is there.

Janet and Devon

Re: As soon as possible after tornadoes touched down in the Dallas area, we posted t on this datehe following on our Home Page regarding Janet's experience. We'll leave the words in their original format because they tell the brief story so well...

While listening to the news during our Dallas area storms the afternoon of April 3, many of us heard the announcement that a tornado had touched down in Janet's home town. A wonderful lady named "Lendi" was quick to Email the Buckaroos family with the following:

Just texted Devon [Dawson] and she called Miss Janet. She's okay from the storm, but had some big hail! She and her grandkids rode out the storm in the bathroom!

Wanted to let everyone know - because when I heard [her home town] on the news, I immediately thought of our sweet lady!

When this webmaster requested information from Janet directly, she later Emailed the following:

We probably had some hail damage to the roof but I won't know until I call them out. The hail I put in the freezer was the size of a 'softball' and then three pieces the size of a baseball. No broken windows and no one hurt.

Obviously, we're grateful for an answer to prayers in Janet's protection.

Re: Janet's response after the webmaster's announcement that he had just read her book...

So glad you got to read some more of the book. It is quite a life and as you can see by reading it, I tried to keep the book as true to how it was without 'trashing' anyone because I didn't think it would help anything so I told it in a way that all of it was still there but 'light' enough to not be disrespectful.

Well you hit it right on the head with Barbara Fairchild. All of us are sick that her name is not there. We all know her and visit with her still but it isn't there. I did 5 proof reads and 'still' didn't catch it.

Re: Dale Evans DVD set...

Wow. I thought this project was 'gone' years ago.

I can't tell you what year it was when they interviewed me on film but had to be on or before 2007. What a hoot.

We'll see what they kept of my interview. They just told me to tell them what connections I had with Dale.

I don't know if I am in it still but, he will send me the DVD so we'll soon know.

Below is the note the Collection's producer sent the day before...

Janet,

Steve and I would like to send you a preliminary release copy of the Dale Evans: Beyond the Happy Trails documentary. This early version of the documentary was packaged with two Roy Rogers movies and two TV shows in November of last year as a promotional program celebrating Roy Rogers 100th Birthday and to garner some feedback for the project.

We have subsequently submitted the documentary to A&E, PBS, APT and RL TV. and are awaiting feedback. We have also contacted NARC (Formerly ARC), Hope Cottage, Happy Trails Foundation and ChildHelp USA, all charities that Roy and Dale were involved with, offering the DVD package as a potential medium to raise funds.

We are also making the documentary available for festival screenings. I recently screened the program at the Williamsburg Film Festival and received very positive feedback.

Your support and assistance in this project has been most appreciated.

Best Regards,
Happy Trails

Bob Sigman

Janet added further comments on March 29...

This is a 'documentary' on Dale Evans.

I was at the Lubbock Symposium several years back/maybe 2007 or 2009 and some guys were filming artists who wanted to say a few words about Dale Evans. Since I was not sure what they wanted, they said 'just talk about Dale and what you thought of her and her career etc so I just started talking and then went on my way.

I had their card in my wallet for a long time and only took it out this year and filed it with my tons of folks names and numbers and was thrilled and surprised to hear from the fella whose card I had stating 'the documentary is finished and I'll send you one if you'll give me an address'.

That email came through you [this webmaster] and it didn't take me too long to get him an answer.

It is a two DVD one box set. The Dale Evans story is well done and laced into her story are
cuts from several people with snippets of what they said. I look every bit my age since they did close ups on everyone but I got over it. I speak for a very few seconds the first time and then at the very end of her story I have the last words by an artist.

I received my 'pre-release' copy and had to watch it to see IF I got into it in any way.

Yippee, I did.

On March 30, Janet added even more...

I am one of the artists who is on this DVD of Dale. I told Bob Sigman I'd see that
we were linked with them to help with their promotion etc.

The title is DALE EVANS Beyond Happy Trails. I am in the first segment which is
33 minutes. I speak two times as does my buddy Devon Dawson. There are two more segments
on the first CD. Roy Togers Show #1 26 minutes and Roy Rogers Show #2 which is 22 minutes.

The Roy Rogers Disc #2 is two full movies. My Pal Trigger 79 min and Lights of old Santa Fe 79 Min.

Their Website is here and their books and movies page is here.

He has told me he will list my book and CD in the General Store so let me know what we can do.

They did the interviews in 2009 at Lubbock TX Symposium. All of the camera shots are really up close and each and every one of my wrinkles were shinning bright but I am thrilled to be in it. Another one of those 'Janet' things of being in the right place and time.

Obviously, this webmaster added the information to our home page, and Mr. Sigman did include Janet's book in the books and movies section. You can visit their website by clicking where indicated. You can purchase the DVD set by clicking here.

Re: YouTube Links from Mustang Mikki...

[From Janet]: These are cute.

[From Mustang Mikki]:

Dear Buckaroos and Parents,

Dad and I finally got a Cowtown Opry You-Tube account up and running, so we uploaded the videos (Big Ball's In Cowtown, The Horse I Love The Best, Texas our Texas). Unfortunently, they won't appear if you search the You-Tube engine until Thursday, (so says the account manager), but I've included the immediate links and if you click on them, they will take you to the video pages...

We also set up a Cowtown Opry You-Tube "channel", which is basically just a site that you could visit or subscribe to, to see all the videos the Cowtown Opry has up-loaded.

* The Horse I Love The Best: click here.

* Texas, Our Texas: click here.

* Big Ball's In Cowtown: click here.

I hope this helps any/all of y'all!

God Bless an' Happy Trails,
Mikki

We haven't seen Megan for a few months but we haven't forgotten that beautiful young child who would blow us away each time she came to Buckaroos. I am sending [a picture from] her audition video clip to y'all just because.

She entered the Denim and Diamonds contest after we sent the notice out and is now going to compete on [it] This coming Saturday Night.

We are all so proud of this little girl. We love her and wish her the best of luck in this competition.

Re: Texas Variety Performers and more on Rodeo City Music Hall...

Headed for the Garland ladies home right now and yes, [the name of the group I sing with, locally, is] Texas Variety Performers. [Our next performance] is March 1 at
The Elmcroft Retirement Center/used to be known as Hearthstone in Garland at 2PM.

I will drive then to the Gala which is being held in the Fort Worth Rodeo Center. Big doings actually.

It was a wonderful show on the 25th [at Rodeo City Music Hall]. Mike Shirley, Candice Lewis, Mustang Mikki, Larry Shipman and I each sang one song on the first half of the show and just had a blast.

The talent for that last show were many of the people who have/had performed for them for the 10 years they have been doing their RCMH Saturday night shows. It was outstanding.

My plan is to do something/a show/monthly with the Texas Variety Performers on the first Thursday of each month. Don't know until told just where it will be.

Re: Kacey Musgraves at the Ryman Auditorium...

Many of you never met Kacey Musgraves but all of you have heard us mention her name as a past Buckaroo who has been in Nashville for a while, and like any career in life, it takes time to work your way up.

This is 'our' Buckaroo friend Kacey making her first appearance on the World Famous Rhyman Auditorium in Nashville. This was at a special invitation show for Radio Station Owners and she received a standing ovation from the crowd.

This show was hosted by The Universal Records People who Kacey is under contract to and in the process of record[ing] her up coming new record for. George Strait and Vince Gill were her OPENING ACT. Needless to say she was very excited at the response to her 'original' song.

Check it out. CONGRATULATIONS TO MISS KACEY MUSGRAVES.

You can see the YouTube video obtained by Kacey's friend Perry here. The photo of Kacey above was from her Wolf Dance appearance May 28, 2011.

Re: Last Rodeo City Music Hall show the previous night...

I was only to play for Candice in the beginning but as it turned out, it was their last RCMH show so I sang one song, Larry sang one song, Mike sang one song, Micaela sang one song and so did Candice.

The second half of the show was some of their old regulars and they did a skit. I skitted out of the building by 9:30 and came home. It was a good show, some really good talent and I was so glad to be a part of 'the last one' for now.

It was fun. I am singing with the 'Garland group' at 2 on Thursday before I go to CTO Gala Night.

Re: Enola Gay Cowtown Opry Supporter and Buckaroo Gramma...

Hello to all,

I received an email from our LONG TIME FRIEND AND SUPPORT OF ALL THINGS COWTOWN OPRY.

The email read 'last night (Feb. 9) at the Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce Banquet, I (ENOLA) was named 'Woman of the Year' and also was given a 'Community Pride Award' for her efforts in reviving the Reilly Springs Jamboree which is a show that some of us have performed on.

The chamber only gives out 7 AWARDS at the annual banquet and Enola got two of the 7. THAT AIN'T BAD any way you look at it.

ALL OF US SAY A BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ENOLA. WE LOVE YOU.

Janet and Devon and all of the CTO organization

Re: news on Kristyn Harris and more...

Kristyn game me permission to forward this to all of you [the Buckaroos]. What a thrill this had to be for Kristyn and especially to have Chuck and Devon there also. Congratulations to Kristyn and all of the kids we know who will be on Shotgun Red's RFD-TV SHOWS THIS SEASON.

Cowtown Opry member Buck Helton 'Big Buck' is also scheduled to film the show and our past Buckaroo Chelsea Beck is also to be on the show.

I am so proud of each of our friends who will be on Shotgun's Shows this season. I know we are all proud of each of them and I can't wait to see the shows. I am sure we will have some type of notice as to when their shows will be aired.

This is so exciting for all of us. CONGRATULATIONS KRISTYN AND ALL OF THE FOLKS WE KNOW WHO MADE THE SHOW.

Janet and Devon

Re: what Kristyn emailed to Janet...

Ms. Janet,

We just got home from Nashville last night- what a trip! I’m really excited about everything we did so I’ll tell you all about it.

The Shotgun Red filming went really well – it was fun to perform on the Showboat! It is supposed to be aired in April or May. You were mentioned in my interview!

My dad and I went to see the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman theater, which of course was a really cool experience. We toured around Nashville and did some other things, like go see the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and Music Row, etc.

My filming was on Monday and that evening we all (me and my dad, Devon and Chuck) went to the Station Inn to go watch the Time Jumpers. Ranger Doug and Joey Miskulin were both there, as well as Vince Gill and his wife Amy Grant, and all the rest of the regular band who were each so amazing, I couldn’t get enough of it!

Devon and I each got to get up and do a song on stage with them, which was such a thrill for me, and honor… Vince Gill was right next to me, just a foot or two away on my left as I sang, and he gave me a high five afterward! My dad got some video of that performance.

I attached a couple pictures so you could see some of the stuff we did. (The pictures with Vince Gill didn’t turn out so good because we didn’t have a flash…oh well. The video came out pretty decent.)

Love, Kristyn

Here are two more photos Kristyn sent in. All four photos in this message can be clicked for larger versions.

The one below was edited by Janet's friend Juderbugg. Thank you Juderbugg!

Re: Mustang Mikki in Martin Guitar Strings contest...

Let's vote for Micaela again. Go to the site, give your email address and vote. One vote a day.

It's a really good song and a good performance and, she is playing her Martin she won.

You can go to the website and vote by clicking the picture above. Here is what Mikki's manager had to say, which was included in Janet's email.

Dear Family and Friends,

I have received many requests from you to let you know what is currently going on with Mustang Mikki. We thank you so much for your interest in her and support of her budding career!

We have created a website for her: mustangmikki.com.

Her website is not fully complete yet, but if you go to it you can see what she is up to. There is a place to leave a comment (which she would love!) and place to email if you want to reach her.

She has entered a song writing contest for Martin guitars and Lifespan strings. Her entry is:

http://lifespan.venturaassociates.net/gallerydetails.php?vid=146.

If you click on that url, you will go straight to her entry and can see and hear her singing the song she wrote for them. If you feel inclined to vote for her entry, she would LOVE that. You can vote once per day per email address until Jan 31. Please pass on to anyone you think would be interested in voting.:)

Thanks again for your love, interest and support.

Re: special appearance at Rodeo City Music Hall...

Don't know if I told you, but one of my mentorees is singing at the opry tonight [Rodeo City Music Hall] and I told her I would go play for her.

The next day, Janet added this:

She is Candice Lewis. She did a good job. I had a good time.

It was fun and all is well.

Re: the "Shotgun Red Show" on RFD...

Did everyone catch Shotgun Red's current show?

He has a 'snippit' of each of the talent that appeared on the season's shows.

Chelsea, Alexa, Naomi and Kristyn were on for several seconds. Very fast but all were/are on.
